Pop culture never fails to bring new trendy characters for kids to dress as during Halloween, but by far the most popular costumes for kids remain the “classics” like monsters and fairytale characters. There is something about these themes that is universally appealing to children everywhere, and considering how popular fairies and princesses are, it can’t just be the fact that we associate Halloween with monsters.

Here are three of the most popular costumes for boys in 2010:

  1. Superheroes. What kid doesn’t want to dress up as a superhero at one point or another? Halloween costumes are the perfect excuse to get a Wolverine or Superman costume. As a bonus, the bright colors make kids easier to spot while walking at night.
  2. Real-life heroes. Policemen, firefighters, astronauts, and soldiers are all extremely popular costumes for boys on Halloween. It’s also cute to match a mom or dad who is a real-life cop, soldier, or other hero.
  3. Retro ’80s costumes. Rock and pop stars are particularly popular choices for their big hair, loud fashion sense, and distinctive, easy-to-recognize looks.

Here are 3 of the most popular costumes for girls in 2010:

  1. Princesses. Little girls love dressing as princesses for Halloween so much that stores typically offer at least a dozen different princess costumes each Halloween — many more if you count specific princess characters, such as the Disney princesses.
  2. Witches. For the little girl who wants to be something spooky, a witch costume is the top choice. Witches can be ugly or pretty, cute or scary, so there are lots of great choices for costumes.
  3. Mermaids. Depending on which story you read, mermaids are beautiful creatures or deadly monsters. That makes them perfect for girls’ Halloween costumes! Mermaid costumes usually come in pretty shiny colors, too.
